“Queen For A Day.”
Not really, but it was an enticing concept. It was a T.V. program running from 1956 to 1964, and was a radio program before that. Here’s what Wikipedia says: “The show opened with host Jack Bailey asking the audience—mostly women—"Would YOU like to be Queen for a day?" After this, the contestants were introduced and interviewed, one at a time, with commercials and fashion commentary interspersed in between. Each contestant was asked to talk about the recent financial and emotional hard times she had been through.” “Many women broke down sobbing as they described their plights.”
The “Queen” was crowned based on an applause meter, with the audience clapping the loudest for the saddest sack. Now, I hate myself for saying “saddest sack” since life’s problems are very real and oftentimes very sad, and it is wonderful that someone might get to be royalty for a day, or an hour, or a minute, or for however long one might imagine it to be. But I found it distasteful, even as a 6th grader in 1956, and I didn’t spend any significant time watching it. Pinky Lee was far more entertaining, and if you remember Pinky, you’re approaching ancient-ness! And honestly, Pinky was not all that good, just better than
Queen For A Day. I can’t imagine going on T.V., bemoaning my sad sack existence, trying to outcry the other contestants so I could get a three day vacation to Wuhan.
The Apostle Paul could have easily been King For A Day. Look at his Bodacious Boo-Hoos. “Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one. Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness. Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.” (2 Corinthians 11:24-28.)
Put the crown on Paul right now! The Applause-Meter is blowing up! Give him an all-expense paid trip to Rome (Oh yeah, he did get that, didn’t he!). But… not so fast, My Friend. Paul did say those things, he did run down the list for us, but listen to the postscript taken from 2 Corinthians 4:8-10, “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.” “WOW! What a fantastic attitude Paul expressed! And he, under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, shared his Secrets For Success with us in Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” I believe one of Paul’s main Secrets For Success was that he “Set (his) your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” (Colossians 3:2.) And you know what? Paul did get his crown, just not here on earth! 2 Timothy 4:8 “Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”
God bless all those who are going through tough times in this life. Jack Bailey had a very nice thought, I suppose, when he closed out each show with the tag, “This is Jack Bailey, wishing we could make every woman a queen, for every single day!"
I’m not a king and never will be, but as a child of the King, I am a prince! 1 John 3:2 assures us saying “Beloved, now are we the sons of God, ..." Forget about “King For A Day,” that’s nothing but frustration, discouragement, and depression! How about “Prince For Eternity!” Why not “Princess For Eternity!” There’s no letdown there, just beautiful mansions, streets of gold, the skies are not cloudy all day, and it’s a guarantee for every person naming the Name of the LORD Jesus Christ!
Let's think on those things today!
Love and Prayers to you all,
Pastor
